KUALA LUMPUR: Commercial property landlords have been urged to consider giving discounts, granting rent deferment or exemptions to tenants who are unable to operate their businesses during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) made the call in view of the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs).

In a statement issued today, it said the Economic Action Council’s (EAC) meeting had focused on views and complaints of SME entrepreneurs facing challenges amidst the global Covid-19 pandemic.

The Unit for the Implementation and Coordination of National Agencies on the Economic Stimulus Package or (Laksana), established by the Finance Ministry, also tabled its report on the progress and implementation of the Economic Stimulus Packages announced by the government to mitigate the adverse impact of the outbreak on the nation’s economy.

The report was tabled to ensure that the objectives (outlined in the Economic Stimulus Packages) could be achieved.

In the same statement, the PMO announced the appointment of two more members – one each from Sarawak and Sabah – to the EAC.

They are Datuk Bridget Lai, who is a prominent banking figure in Sabah; and Sarawak Chamber of Bumiputera Entrepreneurs chairman Datu Abang Halmi Ikhwan.
